Titles in a non-figurative painting are really a kind of convention; in many ways they are not necessary and sometimes, can be more of a hindrance than a help to how an image is received.

But occasionally, when completed an image seems to invite a title.

For some, a title is akin to a portal, a way in to perceived understanding or ‘meaning,’ even when there is no intrinsic meaning or anything to ‘understand’- just presence.

In a Rothko painting for example, the titles are often mere descriptions of the colours used or just numbered or ’Untitled,’ so the innate power of the piece becomes the ‘subject.’

An odyssey can be a number of things, apart from a painting it can, for example, be a journey, a quest, a voyage, a pilgrimage, or an exploration.

Or merely a word, a connotation, that in some way or other, seems to reference, or verbally connect to the image and might help to access it, without being prescriptive, reductive, misleading, or limiting.
